Googles Nexus 7 in danger of failure? Yeah right!

June 29, 2012 Chilling_Silence Personal Rantings

So I was linked to an article written earlier today by a journalist who both *clearly* suffers from a case of “I’ve only ever been an Apple dude” and has absolutely no idea about anything else on the market right now shy of the iPad.

Go have a bit of a read for yourself: http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/Googles-Nexus-7-Tablet-Is-In-Danger-of-Failure-10-Reasons-Why-573051/

After you come back, here’s some reasons why the author Don Reisinger is not only delusional but has absolutely no idea what he’s on about!

So lets go over them one after another:

1) There is nothing wrong with a 7″ tablet. The Kindle Fire has seen great success in its niche market. If the customer wants a bigger screen, they pay for it. If they want a smaller screen, a solid option for an Android-based device is now here. Considering the Kindle Fire doesn’t even ship with the Play Store, it does quite well all things considered.

2) is related to 3), because everybody knows the i* brand. In much the same way Google seem to be doing similar things with the Nexus line, by having a “line” of products. Get a motorbike and the first thing everybody asks you is “When are you going to buy a Harley Davidson?”. I don’t know why because that in itself is a silly question, but it’s just that some people seem to remember certain brand names. iPhone / iPad / iCloud / iPod seem to be remembered, and now Google is establishing its Nexus line of devices. The Nexus Q, the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7. Wouldn’t surprise me if we saw a Nexus 10 in the not too distant future either.
It seems like the author just wanted 10 reasons why it would fail, coz it sounds like a cool number, so split off #2 into the 3rd point as well, when they’re close enough to be the same.

4) So featuring one home page is enough to make or break sales on a device? I notice Apple don’t feature on that homepage yet they do even better than the Kindle Fire? Point is moot.

5) The addition of 4G would have also *significantly* increased the price of the device, not to mention it would have limited it to only a dual-core system, much in the same way the Galaxy S3 4G device is dual-core only. Tradeoffs had to be made to get the price under $200. As it stands, the hardware that’s inside of it is easily comparable with any other tablet on the market (Aside from raw resolution and screen size), and it dominates anything else in the 7″ form-factor or even the <$300 price range (Yeah find me something better for even $300 at the moment? You’ll be hard pressed to). You know the Transformer Prime? It goes for double the price. For what end? More onboard storage and a larger screen? For double the price?!

Google / Asus have said that at that price they’re not making anything off the tablet up-front, just getting it out the door, so they’re no doubt banking on users buying things in the long-run. The companies are just going to have to front-up and swallow the cost of any advertising that they do for the tablet, such as a run of TV ads, promotional materials / videos etc… Then they add in $25 worth of Play Store credit on top just to sweeten the deal for consumers!
Fail point if you ask me.

6) Sure 16GB isn’t enough if you’re an apple user and you’re used to *everything* being stored on your device. If you’re a Google user you’ll know that even 8GB is ample. You’re storing your apps and that’s about it. Everything else you stream from the internet. Music with Google Music, video from YouTube and Google Movies, and photos taken are instantly uploaded to G+ with Instant Upload so they don’t have to sit there forever. It’s a $200 tablet, you’re not going to keep your entire library of HD movies on it, that’s just stupid.
Another fail point from a fanboy who’s never used anything but Apple.

7) Wait a second here … So first of all in 1) this guy bitches about 7″ tablets not going to work, then he goes on about how Apple are going to come in and dominate the 7″ market that’s so ripe for the picking? Whatever dude …

8) No need for it, yet he says in 7) that Apple are about to come out with it?! Geez is this guy high? He can’t decide if he’s swinging left or right… And he’s now made 3 points about the same thing?

9) It’s a Google product, hellooooooo, what a moron!! That’s like saying “Oh Apples iPads are losing their appeal because they’re too tightly reliant upon iTunes and the App Store”. Seriously?! You buy it because you want to use iTunes and buy music from there, or you buy Google because you want to use Google products. At least with Google you have more of a choice. Don’t like the default browser? Google won’t stop you from changing it to something non-Google. Apple on the other hand … Lets just say “Good luck to you” if you ever want Opera to be your default browser on your iPad.

10) Sounds like a great way to get customers onboard and then if they WANT something bigger or with 3G then they’ll fork out for it. If they don’t need something bigger, or 3G, then by all accounts I’m sure they’re going to be pretty damn pleased with it.

What an idiot of a writer if you ask me…
